History and Work Plan of Riparian and Wetlands Project

Benton County has long understood the importance of protecting stream side property and riparian areas.  Current work is also occurring to:

Protecting riparian and wetland areas is important to environmental and economic health of the County.  Residents' value Riparian and Wetland area mapping and planning (see Comprehensive Plan).

Specific Work of the Riparian and Wetlands Project

What will Benton County accomplish with the Riparian and Wetlands Project?

  • Updated Inventory for Riparian and Wetland Areas: through analyses of newly acquired map data (GIS, LiDAR), State and County stream and wetland maps, and other databases
  • Determine Significant Riparian Areas and Update County Wetlands Map: voluntary Advisory Groups composed of local residents, natural resources professionals, and others will work with County staff to shape the work of the project and evaluate significant riparian areas
  • Protection of Significant Riparian Areas: Based on the Riparian Inventory and Riparian Significance Determination of voluntary committees and staff, updates to the current Benton County Development Code requirements will be adopted to provide baseline requirements and regulations to protect riparian corridors
  • Implement Incentives to Enhance Riparian and Wetland Areas: the County will work to establish partnerships with organizations, and other opportunities to connect willing landowners within the adopted Significant Riparian Areas and other stream areas of Benton County with incentives (funding, tax credits, etc.) to improve their riparian and wetland resources.
