Introduction
The last time Benton County released a comprehensive county wide health status report was in 2000. The web-based 2009 Health Status Report was developed in response to the need for current county level health data. This report is a compilation of secondary and primary health indicator data for Benton County.
The goals of the Health Status Report are to:
- Describe the health of Benton County;
- Provide information on health status for public health planning, development of health programs or services, and grant writing;
- Monitor and improve community programs;
- Assess and better understand the county’s health assets and needs;
- Identify health disparities;
- Identify unmet needs and gaps in services provided; and
- Determine public health priorities.
Key informant interviews within Benton County departments and community organizations aided the development of the Health Status Report. Benton County asked key informants which health indicators were important and valuable for public health planning, decision making, and grant writing purposes.
Secondary data was then gathered directly from available sources including Oregon Public Health Division reports. Primary data was gathered from grant funded projects. For each health indicator, Benton County data is presented along with available Oregon data and Healthy People 2010 targets. A brief analytical interpretation of the data and a prevention message, where appropriate, were included with each health indicator.
The Health Status Report is intended to be an ongoing work in progress, not a single cross-sectional glimpse. Information will be updated on a continuing basis as data becomes available.
