Public Health – Chronic Disease Programs

                   Chronic Diseases

Chronic diseases – such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes – are the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. These diseases account for 7 of every 10 deaths and affect the quality of life of 90 million Americans. Although chronic diseases are among the most common and costly health problems, they are also among the most preventable. Adopting healthy behaviors such as eating nutritious foods,

being physically active, and avoiding tobacco use can prevent or control the harmful effects of these diseases.

"Eat your fruits and vegetables." You've likely heard this statement since childhood. Research shows why it is good advice:

  • Healthy diets rich in fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases.
  • Fruits and vegetables also provide essential vitamins and minerals, fiber, and other substances that are important for good health.
  • Most fruits and vegetables are naturally low in fat and calories and are filling.

Pick of the Month is a local campaign to highlight local in-season fruits and vegetables and encourage the community to eat more of them! Check out our monthly tips, recipes, and more.

                   Tobacco Related and

     Other Chronic Diseases (TROCD)

Benton County is developing a plan to prevent, detect, and manage chronic diseases in our community, particularly those related to tobacco use, physical inactivity, and poor nutrition.  Here is what they plan to do:

  • Participate in a Chronic Disease Training Institute which will show the best way to conduct the planning process.
  • Collaborate with community partners to promote and support tobacco use prevention, increased physical activity, healthy eating, early detection of risk factors and chronic diseases, and availability of resources for management of chronic diseases.
  • Complete a Community Assessment with community partners by September 30, 2008. This assessment will focus on best-practices and population-based approaches to prevention, early detection, and management of chronic diseases in settings like schools, worksites, and built environment, etc.
  • Gather and Use Local Data for the Community Assessment.
  • Develop a Community Action Plan by December 31, 2008.
