The Benton County Corrections Facility, built in 1976 with a total of only 8,000 square feet and an original designed capacity of 27 inmates, is the smallest jail per capita in Oregon. 13 double bunks were added in 1993, increasing the capacity to 40 inmates, but its ratio of .50 beds per 1,000 citizens is only one-fourth the statewide and national averages. Benton County rents up to 40 additional jail beds from Lincoln and Yamhill Counties.
