Collaborations that Count
NW Connector Regional Transit System surpasses 1 million bus miles
The Northwest Connector Network, a partnership of transit districts in Benton, Clatsop, Columbia, Lincoln and Tillamook counties, surpassed 1.1 million bus miles in 2017, carrying over 188,000 passengers. Additionally passengers riding the NW Connector in 2017 are estimated to have saved over 5 million in vehicle miles traveled, which translates into estimated 1.3 tons of CO2 or greenhouse gas emissions avoided.
The Northwest Connector Network is a major regional public transit network that connects the Willamette Valley to multiple locations on the central to northern Oregon coast. Five County public transit services, including Benton County, operate the network in conjunction with two Tribal transit systems and other regional partners including Marion-Polk County, Yamhill County, and TriMet. The Coast To Valley Express service is Benton County’s “leg” of the Northwest Connector network.
The Northwest Connector network has been awarded a total of four separate national or regional awards for public transit excellence, from organizations such as the National Association of Development Organizations; the Community Transit Association of America; and the Women’s Transportation Seminar.
Established in 2013, the NW Connector is a regional transit system that has coordinated schedules between the 5 transit districts allowing riders to travel from Astoria to Yachats on the Coast, and between the Coast and Portland, Salem and Corvallis.

Health Department OHP Navigators assist at OSU mass vaccination clinics
During the January 2018 meningococcal B disease mass vaccination clinics at Oregon State University’s Corvallis campus, eight Benton County Health Navigators assisted on site.
The Health Navigators assisted OSU undergraduate students with Oregon Health Plan (OHP) enrollment and information, plus provided any social resource information and navigation needed. County Health Navigators have worked with OSU events in the past, but this was the first time as a “mass vaccination” enrollment event.
The clinics were held to help students meet the new university requirement that all OSU Corvallis students 25 and under must be vaccinated against meningococcal B by Feb. 15. This new requirement results from a sixth OSU undergraduate student since November 2016 being diagnosed with this disease.
The eight Health Navigators completed a total of 151 OHP applications, which covered 165 students.
The second round of vaccination clinics were held Tuesday, Feb. 13 to Thursday, Feb. 15. Although there was a lower turnout of students, three Health Navigators assisted 70 individuals and completed 27 applications.
