Criminal justice system assessment project launch and community meeting
Around 50 community members attended the criminal justice system assessment project launch and community meeting on February, 20, 2018 at the Courtyard by Marriott Corvallis.
County Commissioner Xan Augerot opened the evening’s program with an overview of the project’s purpose and introduced Steering Committee members. Project director Karl Becker and project manager Ari Basil-Wagner gave a brief presentation highlighting the goals and timeline of the assessment.
“We decided to host a launch event to start the criminal justice system assessment with a dialogue about objectives, process and outcomes,” said Commissioner Xan Augerot. “A high-level outcome is that we will engage the residents of Benton County in developing a vision for what the criminal justice system should look like. It should include the whole range of programs for individuals interacting with the criminal justice so that we can reduce the rate of recidivism and improve the quality of life for those inmates after jail and make our community safer.”
“We know we have facility issues, but this is a systems-focused assessment and there are no foregone outcomes.”
Following the brief program, Commissioner Augerot, Becker and Basil-Wagner fielded questions and comments from attendees for about an hour. Positive endorsements were offered about the data-driven process and the large number of public engagement opportunities, and criticism focused on the membership of the Steering Committee and skepticism about the intentions of the assessment.
The assessment is projected to occur in four phases during 2018. The next public engagement event is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, May 24, 2018.
