Home safety tips from the Benton County Sheriff’s Office
STOP, THIEF!
HOME AND PERSONAL SAFETY
Corvallis and Benton County have seen a surge in burglaries this year, with 60 occurrences so far in 2018.
Whether you leave for the weekend or for several months, there are steps you can take to minimize the chances of becoming a victim of burglary and theft. The objective is to leave your home secure and looking as though you have never left.
BEFORE LEAVING HOME:
- Do not advertise vacations or absences. Talking about upcoming vacations in public places or writing about them on social media lets predators know when the house will be empty.
- Ask a person you trust to keep an eye on your residence while you are away. Give them a key to check your house regularly. Give them your itinerary of your trip so they can reach you in an emergency. Ask if they may be willing to park one of their cars in your driveway and change curtain positions as if you were home (versus leaving draperies closed).
- Consider connecting your indoor and outdoor lights to an automatic timer to give the appearance that someone is home.
- Stop mail and paper deliveries unless you have made other arrangements with neighbors. Any accumulation is a sure sign that the resident is away.
- Be sure the garage doors are locked and electric door openers are unplugged. Vehicles in your garage should also be locked and the keys stored in a safe location. Do not store valuables, such as laptop or purse, in the vehicle.
- If you mow and rake on a regular schedule, have someone continue this while you’re away.
- Record your driver’s license, credit card numbers, passports, and any other important documents. Leave the records in a home safe or bank safety deposit box.
- Let family or friends know where you’re going and when you expect to be home.
TIPS OUT IN PUBLIC:
- Never display large sums of money in public. Carrying a credit card, debit card, or vacation card is safer than large sums of money.
- Never leave personal documents in your vehicle.
- Shop in pairs or in a group.
- Park in well lighted areas.
- Keep your wits about you, if something feels amiss or suspicious, avoid it, or report it. Keep alert and tuned into your surroundings. Don’t become so absorbed on your phone that you become an easy target.
SECURING HOME AND PROPERTY:
There are some basic measures that can be taken to secure your home and property and make it less inviting to burglars whether you are at home or on vacation.
- Ensure doors and windows fully close and lock.
- Upgrade doors by using 3” screws to attach hinges to the door to the doorframe. Install a dead bolt with an extra-long throw.
- Outbuildings should also be secure. Garage and storage sheds should all be lockable.
- Remove or trim bushes and trees around the house to eliminate hiding places and add visibility to doorways and windows.
- Install alarms. An audible alarm will often deter an intruder. Even the posting of a system may be enough of a deterrent. Thieves will focus on the easy target.
- Install motion sensor lighting around the perimeter of the home. Thieves like to hide in the dark. Extra lighting in dark places reduces the attraction of thieves to those areas.
