Flood outreach publication arriving in the week ahead
Wednesday, December 6, 2017
This week Benton County property owners with some portion of their property within the FEMA-designated floodplain will receive the annual Flood Facts publication. A PDF of the publication is available online.
On behalf of its property owners, the county has participated in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) for the past 15 years. The county has earned a Class 6 rating which results in a 15% discount on flood insurance premiums for properties located in a floodplain and 5% discount for properties located outside a floodplain.
Benton County’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Class 6 rating is established through ongoing and proactive participation in the NFIP’s Community Rating System (CRS). The annual Flood Facts publication is one of the main outreach projects undertaken by the county that receives CRS credit.
Similar discounts are available for properties located in the cities of Albany and Corvallis.
This year’s Flood Facts publication includes information about the flood insurance discount, tips to protect yourself and your property, information about development activity in the floodplain, and how to get informed about emergencies via the Linn-Benton Alert notification system.
For more information about flood safety, Benton County Emergency Services provides a step-by-step guide at https://www.co.benton.or.us/sheriff/page/flood-safety to prepare for a flood, learn how you will be warned about potential floods, and what to do during and following a flood.
Residents and property owners within the floodplain with property-specific questions may want to consult with the Benton County Floodplain Manager for flood mitigation ideas. Contact the Community Development department at 541-766-6819 to reach county staff available to discuss property-specific floodplain information, retrofitting option recommendations, flood insurance requirements, drainage issues, and other flood protection measures.
