Isolation and Quarantine Guidance

Updated 01/24/2022

Based on what we know about COVID-19 and the variants, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Oregon Health Authority have adjusted the recommended time for isolation for the public. This change is motivated by science demonstrating that the majority of COVID-19 transmissions generally occur 1-2 days prior to the onset of symptoms and the 2-3 days after. These new recommendations can be different depending on a few factors, such as your vaccination status, whether or not you have symptoms, and if you have tested positive.

If you test positive for COVID-19, have been exposed to COVID-19:

Tell your close contacts right away

If you have tested positive for COVID-19, you can help slow the spread by telling those you’ve been in close contact with right away. Close contact means spending 15 minutes or more within 6 feet of someone with or without a mask in any single day.

  • If you had or have symptoms: Contact the people you were in close contact with beginning 2 days before your symptoms began.
  • If you did not or do not have symptoms: Contact the people you were in close contact with beginning 2 days before you took your COVID-19 test.
  • Share the quarantine guidelines: Your close contacts may need to quarantine (stay home) depending on their COVID-19 vaccination history.
