Benton County Commissioner

This office will appear on the May 17, 2022 Primary Election ballot. Major party candidates who are nominated in the Primary will appear on the November 8, 2022 General Election ballot.

Requirements for the office of County Commissioner:

  • Must be a citizen of the United States at the time of taking office and thereafter, for the length of time in office;
  • Must be a resident of Benton County for at least one year prior to the time of filing for office and thereafter, for the length of time in office;
  • Must be a registered voter of Benton County at the time of taking office and thereafter, for the length of time in office; and
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of taking office.
  • No other special qualifications or certifications required;
  • Term of office is for the duration of four years;
  • If office is vacant, county governing body appoints qualified person to serve until successor is elected at next regular election.

Ranked Choice Voting was approved by Benton County Voters in November 2016 through passage of ballot measure 2-100.  Ranked Choice Voting is only used when a minimum of three candidates are nominated for the General Election, for the office of Benton County Commissioner.  Ranked Choice Voting was first implemented during the November 2020 General Election.

Democratic and Republican Filing Resources for the May 17, 2022 Primary Election

First day to file: September 9, 2021
Last day to file: March 8, 2022 at 5:00 PM
Last day to withdraw: March 11, 2022 at 5:00 PM

If filing by fee, form SEL 101 Candidate Filing - Major Political Party or Nonpartisan and $50 are required.

Democratic party candidates filing by petition will need to submit SEL 101 Candidate Filing - Major Political Party or NonpartisanSEL 102 Candidate Signature Sheet - Major Party and SEL 338 Petition Submission - Candidate, Voters' Pamphlet prior to obtaining the 500 valid signatures. Please have all signatures into the Elections office by 5:00 pm March 1, 2022 to allow for adequate processing time before the March 8, 2022 filing deadline. 

Republican party candidates filing by petition will need to submit form SEL 101 Candidate Filing - Major Party or NonpartisanSEL 102 Candidate Signature Sheet - Major Party and SEL 338 Petition Submission - Candidate, Voters' Pamphlet prior to obtaining the 242 valid signatures. Please have all signatures into the Elections office by 5:00 pm March 1, 2022 to allow for adequate processing time before the March 8, 2022 filing deadline.

Minor Parties and Nonpartisan Filing Resources for the November 8, 2022 General Election

First day to file: June 1, 2022
Last day to file: August 30, 2022 at 5:00 PM
Last day to withdraw: September 2, 2022 at 5:00 PM

Minor party candidates will need to submit form SEL 110 Candidate Filing - Minor Political Party with the Candidate Nominating Certificate executed by a party office and notarized.

Nonpartisan candidates will need to submit form SEL 114 Candidate Filing - Individual Electors, SEL 122 Candidate Signature Sheet - Nonpartisan and SEL 338 Petition Submission - Candidate, Voters' Pamphlet prior to obtaining the 528 valid signatures. Please have all signatures into the Elections office by 5:00 pm August 23, 2022 to allow for adequate processing time before the August 30, 2022 filing deadline.
