Who decides when an election will be held?
The Oregon State Legislature, Governor, Board of County Commissioners, City Councilors, and Special District Boards call the elections for the candidates and measures according to the governing statutes. There are four dates each year set aside for elections. However, in urgent situations, governing bodies can set an election on another date.

How does a person become a candidate?
Before each candidate election a list of positions that will appear on that election is published in local papers. Anyone who is interested in becoming a candidate can visit Benton County Elections website, call the Benton County Elections Office at 541-766-6756 or come by our office located at 4500 SW Research Way in Corvallis, for more information on qualifications and deadlines that apply to filing for office.

Where can I get information on candidates and issues?
A state Voter’s Pamphlet is printed for most statewide elections. In addition, Benton County often prints a Voter’s Pamphlet covering countywide or local issues. If no Voter’s Pamphlet is printed you can check the Benton County Elections Office website to review the local candidate and measure filings. The local media also covers each election and will provide additional election and candidate information.

I miss going to the polls and would rather do that than mail my ballot.
There are polling booths set up at the Benton County Elections Office located at 4500 SW Research Way in Corvallis. Anyone who would prefer to vote at a polling place can bring their ballot here and vote.

What types of measures require 50% of the qualified voters to vote in order to be passed?
Measures which involve an increase in property taxes. This is true except for May and November elections. Money measures placed on May and November election ballot do not need to have 50% of qualified voters return their ballots in order for the measure to pass.
