County Hosts Transportation System Plan Workshops
Wednesday, February 21, 2018
Benton County Public Works is hosting its first series of Community Workshops for the update of the County’s Transportation System Plan (TSP). The TSP evaluates the current transportation system and outlines policies and projects that are important to protecting and enhancing the quality of life in Benton County. The project will identify and prioritize improvements needed to improve connectivity for all travel modes, support planned land uses and economic development, and reduce reliance on the automobile. The County is also coordinating transportation plans for the cities of Adair Village and Monroe.
The update to the transportation system plan began in mid-2017. Benton County Public Works spent the latter half of 2017 reviewing existing conditions, drafting potential goals and objectives with input from the county’s 2040 Community Core Values, and starting to analyze future transportation conditions.
Beginning in March 2018, community open houses are slated to occur in three locations throughout Benton County: Monroe, west of Philomath, and Adair Village/North Albany.
“This series of Community Workshops is being conducted early in the process to gather community input on the existing and future transportation system needs and potential solutions,” said Laurel Byer, County Engineer. “For people that can’t make a workshop, we created an interactive feedback tool where users can drop a pin on a specific location on a map and attach a comment. We hope this tool will help us identify specific locations that are concerns for the public.”
The workshops will be conducted in an open house style, with multiple opportunities for community input. Staff presentations and question/answer sessions will occur at 6:00 pm at each event. Spanish interpretation will be provided at the March 8 workshop in Monroe. Refreshments and raffle prizes will be provided.
- Thursday, March 8, 5:30 - 7:30 pm at the Monroe Community Library, 380 North 5th Street, Monroe, OR 97456 (Spanish interpretation available)
- Tuesday, March 13, 5:30 - 7:30 pm, Mary’s River Grange, 24707 Grange Hall Road, Philomath, OR 97370
- Thursday, March 15, 5:30 - 7:30 pm, North Albany Middle School, 1205 NW North Albany Road, Albany, OR 97321
If you are a senior age 60 or older, or a person of any age with a disability, and need a ride to a workshop, please contact Dial-a-Bus at least 24-hours in advance: 541-752-2615.
A second series of workshops to present and receive community feedback on proposed projects and priorities will be held in late Spring.
“We are intentionally reaching out to the rural communities to get their important input on the transportation system and see what are priorities in their communities,” said Annabelle Jaramillo, County Commissioner. “These workshops are a great opportunity to talk with Benton County staff about the update process, review information, and provide input.”
The Transportation System Plan (TSP) provides a long-term guide for County transportation investments. The TSP will identify opportunities to improve the current transportation system and provide a fiscally realistic forecast of what it may look like through 2040. A TSP is required by the State of Oregon to help integrate the County’s plans into the statewide transportation system.
The County’s Transportation System Plan is on schedule and plan to finish the adoption process by the end of 2018.
